Kiso Horses

the horses crossing

Matsuo Bashō, Autumn, 1688 (translated by Andrew Fitzsimons in Bashō - The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō).

The area around Kiso was famous for horse-rearing and Kiso horses, short, stout and solid were perfect for those travelling the Kiso Road.

Walking from Kiso-Fukushima, through lovely, lush forest to the Kaida Plateau we came across the Kiso Uma No Sato Horse Farm (and riding school) before gazing upon (or not really gazing upon thanks to low hanging cloud cover) the sacred Mt. Ontake, and active volcano.
